Born in 1976 Taipei, Wu Tung-Lung is one of the few mid-career artists who persist in abstract painting in Taiwan. His works explore the symbolic presentation of organic shapes and the rhythmic arrangement of geometric lines. He developed his unique creative vocabulary and style by ingeniously applying various artistic elements such as linearity, color blocks, volumes, and spaces. All the monochromatic imprimatura, geometric patterns, and minimalist lines and patterns in his works are the abstract yet dramatic landscapes shaped by his strict self-discipline and full consciousness. His works delicately bear the unique signature of handiworks emphasized in traditional paintings, and therefore render themselves visually pleasing by creating a sense of fluidity and freedom. Analyzing the contextual development of the artist’s paintings, we may notice that all his works, whatever in which dimension, successfully harmonize not only polarity but also the law of contradiction with pure and minimalist symbols in a rationally checked yet emotionally charged manner. He creates the experience of simple and elegant colors by presenting the levels of monochromatic imprimatura and the infiltration of different hues of cool colors on the canvas processed under established and complex procedures. In terms of painting technique, the artist neither covers the canvas with layers of intense colors, nor mixes different colors in the strokes. Rather, he removes or ameliorates the artificial painterliness in his works with mechanical back-and-forth brushstrokes. Finally, he gives prominence to the hand-painted texture with quasi-horizontal or daubing strokes, creating dramatic tension and a sense of volume on the seemingly flimsy surface.

Developed since 2002, the Symbol series represents the artist’s earliest formal vocabulary that is still evolving. The unrecognizable geometric or organic shapes are arranged in the center of the canvas. The clear yet unintelligible abstract symbols and the monochromatic imprimatura, along with their stark contrast, are the perfect foils for each other. They are embedded in the balanced and harmonious composition, creating the visual depth of space. In other words, the artist tries to stretch the viewers’ imagination and cogitation of the visual world by blending the foreground with the background on the canvas, and meanwhile setting them in isolation with each other. Developed in 2007, the Color Lines series unfolds the artist’s creative and intuitive formal thinking and interpretation. The artist tends to exert his consistent power of lyrical abstraction that penetrates the spatial configuration of his paintings, making it run in concert with the straight lines that symbolize absolute rationality. The artist deliberately arranges his works in single, juxtaposed, or multi-framed forms, which not only expands the possibilities and imaginations of his works beyond the limited horizons of 2D paintings, but also grants them the characteristics of 3D installations. Each artistic element in Wu’s works, be it an abstract symbol or a grid of rational lines, commonly implies his color psyche and multiple interpretations on figurative structures. The perfect and rational composition brims surprisingly with the artist’s profound and heartfelt emotions.
